The Prize Bowl
The winner of The Art Fund Prize becomes the holder for one year of the Prize bowl which was commissioned from the craftsman Vladimir Böhm in 2002.
Vladimir describes the bowl as "representing the act of giving or offering." It is made of solid fine silver, weighing around 2.5 kilos. The outside of the bowl is covered with white vitreous enamel which, in places, has been mixed with silica to create contrasting textures.
The inside of the bowl has been stoned down, brushed and treated with acid to create mat, white surface. The bottom has been scarred to relieve the whiteness of the surface and provide a visual focus.
Vladimir works in precious metals including gold and silver, to which he applies glass enamel in iridescent colours. The enamel transforms the unusual vessels, creating individual and unique objects. He has won a number of prizes for metalwork, enamelling and pewterware from Guilds, professional organizations and the media.
His work has been exhibited at Sotheby's, the Crafts Council, Bluecoat Display Centre, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, as well as internationally. It is in the collection of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, 401 Collection and Aberdeen Art Gallery. Vladimir lives and works in London.
