Judges announced for Art Fund Prize 2012

Lord Chris SmithFormer culture secretary Lord Smith of Finsbury will chair the judging panel for the tenth year of the Art Fund Prize. Six judges from the worlds of art, journalism and academia will join Lord Smith to decide which museum or gallery will win the £100,000 prize and be named Museum of the Year.

The full judging panel includes:

  • Lord Smith of Finsbury (Chair), former Labour MP and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport
  • Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE, physicist, author and broadcaster
  • Charlotte Higgins, author and Guardian chief arts writer
  • Lucy Worsley, author, broadcaster and Chief Curator at Historic Royal Palaces
  • Sir Mark Jones, Master at St Cross College, Oxford and former director of the Victoria and Albert Museum
  • Rick Mather, architect
  • Lisa Milroy, artist and Head of Graduate Painting at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL

The submission period for the Prize opened in October 2011 and closes on December 1. The judges will select a longlist of ten museums, which the panel will visit before deciding on a shortlist (announced May 2012). The winner of the Prize will be revealed at a ceremony on 19 June 2012.

Lord Smith said: ‘I am delighted to have been asked to be the Chair of the Art Fund Prize for the tenth year of the award. Museums and galleries have come a long way in the last decade and with the jury I look forward to the challenge of selecting venues that have recently made a truly important contribution to the cultural life of the UK.’

The judging panel has also been announced for the Clore Award for Museum Learning 2012, a £10,000 award which celebrates achievements in learning programmes at museums and galleries. The judges are:

  • Dame Vivien Duffield (co-Chair), philanthropist and Chair of the Clore Duffield Foundation
  • Sally Bacon (co-Chair), Executive Director, Clore Duffield Foundation
  • Sharon Heal, editor of Museums Journal
  • Gerard Kelly, editor of the Times Educational Supplement
  • Professor Mick Waters, Professor of Education at the University of Wolverhampton

The winner of the award, which sits under the umbrella of the Art Fund Prize, will also be announced on 19 June 2012.
