National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh: National Museum of Scotland Development
The £47.4 million redevelopment of the National Museum of Scotland has reinvented the grand Victorian vision of an encyclopedic museum for the contemporary era. Attracting over 100,000 visitors in its first six days of opening, the museum now showcases 8,000 curiosities and spellbinding objects which had never been displayed before. Its 36 galleries feature exhibits collected from all over Scotland and beyond, and cover life, the universe and everything in it. Visitors have the chance to come face to face with a Tyrannosaurus rex, and admire fascinating objects from an autogyro to a giant geode. Dr Gordon Rintoul, Director, National Museums Scotland commented: "We have returned an outstanding Victorian building to its original grandeur and created 16 new galleries to stimulate and inspire the minds of generations of visitors. We have been thrilled by the positive reception the museum has had from visitors from near and far.
