M Shed, Bristol: A New Museum for Bristol

Bristol’s new museum is devoted to telling the story of the city and its people. The £27 million development opened in June 2011 and has already attracted almost 450,000 visitors.

Located on the historic dockside, Bristol's flagship museum has been designed to retain the unique character of the former 1950s transit shed. Three galleries reveal the story of the city and its unique place in the world. From prehistoric times to the present day, visitors can explore the history of Bristol through the objects and stories of the people who made the city what it is today.

Julie Finch, Head of Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives said: “M Shed's innovative approach to telling the story of Bristol through the people who have helped to shape the city, its international collections, the interpretation of objects and artefacts and the building’s design, which retains the character of the historic dockside are all part of what makes it a very special museum.
