The Yorkshire Museum, for Letting in the Light – Revitalising the Yorkshire Museum for the 21st century

The Yorkshire MuseumThe Letting in the Light project has re-established the ideals and design of its original Georgian founders which for nearly fifty years have been dimmed by modern display alterations.

Three permanent new galleries are complemented by The Learning Level and an audio-visual experience

Our mission is to cherish the collections, buildings and gardens entrusted to York Museums Trust, presenting and interpreting them as a stimulus for learning, a provocation to curiosity and a source of inspiration and enjoyment for all.

The Yorkshire Museum's collections today total nearly 1.5 million objects covering archaeology, geology, biology, scientific instruments and numismatics alongside an historic library of some 42,000 volumes.

They include some globally significant objects such as; the York helmet, the Middleham jewel, the Ormside bowl, The Vale of York Viking Hoard, The Middlesbrough meteorite, Great Auks, Passenger Pigeons and one of the most complete specimens of Moa in the world.

Some of your comments:

The museum has a completely different look and feel than from just a few years ago. It houses some of the greatest treasures from Roman, Viking and medieval Britain and all collected from York. It is certainly a one of a kind museum in the country and has the claim to displaying the most complete fossil of an Icthyosaur in the World! Having renovated the building on a relatively small budget to the standard it is is a great achievement.
Alicia Stabler, York

Excellent exhibits, enthusiastic and knowledgable staff. The museum, whilst fairly small has been well laid out and is full of artifacts. A really good way of spending a few hours learning about the local area.
John Pank, Middleton On The Wolds

This must be the most forward thinking and imaginative museum I have visited. The exhibits are particularly well laid out and described in simple English, thereby being accessible to all walks of life regardless of age or culture. It is not only visitor friendly but is staffed by extremely knowledgeable, enthusiastic and helpful people who are clearly more than just employees - they are part of the experience you enjoy during your time in the building.
