The Polar Museum, for Promoting Britain's polar heritage: developing the Polar Museum at the Scott Polar Research Institute
The Polar Museum promotes understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage resulting from the exploration and scientific study of the Polar Regions by organisations and individuals of all nations, but particularly by those of Great Britain. The Museum was established principally to preserve the collections relating to Polar exploration and – later – scientific research in the Polar Regions. These collections are recognised as being of international importance. Its second major function is to support teaching and research in the University of Cambridge. Some of your comments: A tremendous museum that gives a real flavour of life and exploration at the poles of the earth. Many of the artifacts from previous polar expeditions are moving and humbling, and some, such as letters home and journals from members of the Terra Nova Expedition are just iconic. The museum simply, dramatically and authentically shows the huge amount of scientific work accomplished by Britain over some 150 years of polar exploration. The importance of the records kept by those early adventurers is only now being fully appreciated; the Institute and the museum enable us to acknowledge and be grateful for the dedication of those early explorers. At the same time it provides a detailed, but easily accessible, record of the deeply touching human stories that lie behind the triumphs and tragedies of this vast body of work. The people were exceptionally welcoming and the exhibits truly fascinating; please support this museum!
