Leighton House, for Closer To Home: The Restoration and Reopening of Leighton House Museum
The purpose of the museum is to increase the public's understanding and enjoyment of the home and painting studio of Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830-1896) and his contemporaries in the 'Holland Park Circle' of artists. The core collections consist of over 85 oils and sculpture by Leighton and 700 drawings and sketches as well as works by his contemporaries. In addition to furnishings, the house also contains some 1000 sixteenth and seventeenth tiles from Syria and Turkey built into the fabric of the building.
Some of your comments: A small house, in museum terms, rescued and reinstated as a diamond from the period. So much to see and reflect on. Rooms flowing from one to another and delightful surprises everywhere. The tiles are especially beautiful and the central staircase is superb. It is a very fine example of a local museum that has been lovingly restored and is making gret efforts to help provide a varied cultural focus for our community. As a local resident, I value Leighton House greatly and often take guests there to share its many treasures - now much improved by its recent refurbishment. It is an unexpected gem hidden away from bustling London life - it is tranquil, uplifting, light, surprising, full of colour and interest but not busy, human-scale. I could quite happily live there as it feels like a home not a museum.
